THE WESTERN FRINGES
B/W PHOTOGRAPHS BY BRANDON SORG, 2005 KODAK AWARD RECIPIENT

June 19 - August 4, 2006
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 22, 5-7PM

The Western Fringes documents the outskirts of downtown Chicago at
nighttime. It is desolate, quiet, and seemingly undisturbed, at least until the
sun rises. The area is a mix of old and new. There are worn-out industrial
buildings, some still in use, while others have long been abandoned. Lights
proliferate over the urban landscape, allowing us to continue travel amidst
the dark. Nearly every crack and crevice of the landscape is illuminated
and visible, even where no one is expected to be around to notice. And
somehow, the brilliance of this area during the night is more alive than ever
seen during the day.

The Kodak Award is a merit-based scholarship awarded annually to an
exceptional Columbia College Chicago photography student.
